lara was quiet on the way home from the station. While her cousin was busy making friends with every commoner in London, Elara was dying to get home and blow off a little steam. It didn't help matters that Nik was watching her like a hawk. What had she been thinking accepting his proposal? Sam didn't intend to marry, not Nik, not anyone. She had a few more months before she inherited her father's estate and could make her own decisions. She had no idea his will stipulated a marriage - and if she had, she could only guess at his motivation.
Her father had largely been an enigma in Elara's life. Ever since her parents divorce, the relationship with her father had been limited. She didn't blame him. She knew too well what her mother was capable of, and didn't doubt that the bitch got some kind of satisfaction in making her father's life miserable, on top of whatever satisfaction she got from making Sam miserable. But she did know that the man loved her. Some of her happiest memories, most of her happiest memories, had been with her father. There were times when she swore he was still with her, watching over her. She felt hot shame when she thought of what he would think of her recent actions and her involvement in Rafe's demise. Would he still love her? Was she worth loving?
These were questions that didn't bear thinking about. She was through with the guilt. At the end of the day she had to do what she did best - bury it - it was the only way she'd survive. So that was the plan, tonight she would dance, make bad decisions, and get over the incident.
She was running late, she had told Lyra to meet her at the fancy cocktail lounge at nine and it was a quarter to ten, but ditching Nik had been more difficult than she anticipated - then she had to get ready after pretending to go to bed pleading a headache.
Entering the club, her head held high, she only mildly noticed the appreciative looks coming her way. Elara was still elegant in the skin tight bandage dress, but there was an added confidence that no sixteen year old should have had. She paused by the entrance seeking her friend in the crowd.

There was fashionably late, and then there was Emara. Lyra knew not to expect Emara to arrive by nine but spending most of an hour by herself was also not something she had planned on doing. Certainly, by a quarter after she would arrive. At half past, definitely. Lyra was three drinks in and had already bummed two cigarettes from two different men by the time Emara finally arrived.
Standing against the back wall, opposite the front doors, Lyra had clear view of Emara’s scanning gaze. “Thanks,” she said to the wizard who’d been hitting on her for the past several minutes, having asked him for his napkin which he obliged with a smirk as though he had just gifted her a trip to Greece. Propping the cigarette in her mouth so that both of her hands were free, she pulled up the skirt of her skin-tight dress as she bent over a nearby table. Revealed on her thigh was a garter with her wand tucked carefully inside. Her dress had been charmed to hide any unflattering lines caused by keeping her wand hidden here, but it was so much better than toting around a handbag all evening. Lyra only carried handbags as fashion accessories, and much preferred to have her hands free during whatever outing she may find herself on. Using a writing charm, Lyra scrawled a note to her friend on the napkin and pressed her lips to it, leaving an imprint of her bright red lipstick, then sent the note flying into the air like a little paper owl.
You’re late
Returning her wand to its place on her thigh, Lyra shimmied as she smoothed out her dress. She took a long drag off her cigarette and leaned back against the wall. She snapped her fingers near her face. “Up here, mate.” He had been staring at her thigh while her skirt had been hiked up. Maybe, if he was lucky, she’d shag him in the loo before she left. Lyra had since given up on trying to shag every bloke she could as a way of easing the pain she felt after Julian had left her, but a witch had needs and he was good enough looking that she wouldn’t mind fulfilling those needs with him, should it come to that.

mara raised a delicate brow as the napkin fluttered into her palm. She brought the note upward to read and rolled her eyes, but she was thankful Lyra had waited for her all the same.
At least Lyra was here, which took away the immediate concern that she would be partying alone tonight. Not that she would be alone for long if she wished otherwise, but Lyra could also be a buffer against unwanted attention. Emara was in no mood to deal with any hassles tonight.
Finally, Emara decided to head toward the bar. She couldn't see Lyra from the entryway and she didn't care for the attention standing alone looking mildly lost would bring her way. If she didn't see her friend, then at least she could get a drink, besides Emara wouldn't have been too shocked to see Lyra at the bar herself.
Emara had long ago perfected the air of confidence required in ordering a drink when one was underage, but it was unnecessary as she had an account at the upscale lounge under a false identity that she charged all her drinks to. Ironically Nik had helped set it up for her. At the thought she felt a pang of guilt for deceiving him. She knew he was just worried about her, and she couldn't blame him. On the outside looking in she'd be worried too. But she couldn't stand his coddling, and he should have known better.
Her drink was finished quickly and in her hand before her thoughts could linger too long on the disaster that was her fiance.
Taking a long sip she briefly she scanned the room once more until her eyes landed on the blonde she had been looking for. Slowly her lips turned upward into a devious smirk. She quirked a brow at the man struggling to look at Lyra's face rather than her chest. Men.
Instead of making a bee line toward her friend she paused to see if Lyra wanted to continue conversation with the man that was clearly a toy for the blonde to play with. That's all any of them were for the two girls. Just toys.
Lyra had screwed up and fallen in love with Julian. Not that Julian was supposed to be a toy, no Emara loved Julian and wouldn't play with him like that. That didn't mean she was above using him like a tool. He was supposed to be a tool to restore Lyra's reputation, but the silly girl had fallen for him instead, now he was a heartbreak.
Emara didn't understand. She had never been in love, and she wasn't quite sure the emotion really existed, and if it did exist it wasn't for people like her.

Shifting her attention from the wizard trying his best not to ogle her, over to the brunette at the bar who finally seemed to lock on to Lyra’s location in the crowded club, Lyra smiled and rolled her eyes subtly. “What’s your name again?” she asked, leaning closer to the man and running her free hand along his collar, feeling the material with her fingers. “Brayden,” he answered. “Well, Brandon," she replied, purposely mistaking his name so that there was no confusion about her intentions. He was for fun, not for anything serious. "My friend’s just arrived, and it’d be rude of me not to chat her up. Come find me later.” She gave him a small peck on the cheek, leaving a light dusting of her lipstick in a perfect little kiss mark on the side of his face, then put out her cigarette in the ashtray on the table in front of her. She gave him a wink as a last flirty little hint that she was interested, and then began weaving her way the short distance through the crowd up to the bar.
“Rethinking my plan to lie to Nik?” she asked in greeting, remarking indirectly on her excessive tardiness. There was a little laugh in her voice as she spoke. Leaning over the bar, letting her top hang enough to show off her breasts across the bar, and her perfectly shaped bum to the rest of the club, Lyra flagged down the bartender. “Another dirty martini,” she said casually, quickly turning her attention back to Emara as if there had been no interruption to their conversation.
