Welcome to Until The End. We are a moderate Harry Potter role-playing site set in the Marauder's Era. Our plot is generally derived from details in the book, but as an AU site we do take liberties most anywhere we like. Those who died in the books can have a second chance at living, and those who lived are always at risk.
Tom Marvolo Riddle has long since disappeared and in his stead Lord Voldemort has risen, bringing a small army with him. The Ministry of Magic has thus far ignored the growing menace that is the Death Eaters and Albus Dumbledore has taken it upon himself to defend the wizarding community from an evil he knows is building. War is coming. Pick a side!

Grizzly Bear Edgar recalls learning how to play guitar as a small child with his muggle grandfather. He remembers sitting on the back porch as his grandad showed him the chords and where to place his fingers. It’s a very strong and specific moment in Edgar’s life, but easily his happiest memory.
He sees that the Dark Lord’s reign of terror is over. His friends and family are safe and everyone looks at peace.
His greatest fear is that his family is dead and there is no one to blame but him. His boggart turns into the lifeless faces of his loved ones, twisting and turning into each individual family member until Edgar sees nothing but a blur in the end.
Ministry of Magic – Auror Division Woodworth-Birkman Personality Assessment #3 Applicant: Bones, Edgar ID Number: 030348
You have 40 minutes to complete the assessment. Turn in to your instructor upon completion.
Please use one word to describe yourself:Genuine.
Please defend your argument (max 125 words): Genuineness stems from a strength of character and emotional resilience as being true to yourself requires confidence, tenacity, and bravery. Over the years, I have come to form my own opinions and perspective of things, and I am secure enough to admit where I stand in this world. I am trustworthy, thick-skinned, and not driven by my ego. My goal is to genuinely leave this world – for both muggles and wizards – better than I found it. I believe I can best serve this task as an Auror, where my tolerance to embrace individuality and differences makes me a great candidate for direct and honest interactions with the public.
You previously stated you grew up as the middle child. How did this shape you? Please defend your argument (max 125 words): I grew up to be an excellent negotiator. As a middle child, I was used to getting stuck between sibling disputes and I learned the necessary skillset to be more patient, diplomatic, and persuasive. It’s helped my ability to see all sides of an argument, and to be empathic and to aptly judge the reactions of others.
I’ve also learned to be a great team player. I was born into a world of sharing – my space, my time and my parents’ affection. So as a result, I have the collaboration skills that allow me to be flexible with different personalities.
Lastly, I’m as loyal as they come. Despite our disagreements, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my siblings (and now to my friends by extension).
You cited your father and grandfather as having the biggest influences in your life. Please defend your argument (max 125 words): My father provided me with the foundations of my moral code. He worked as a senior manager who fought against unfair policies towards muggles and muggleborns. He isn’t popular among some pureblood circles, but he’s never shied from his work. I admire his boldness and want to emulate the same fairness towards all people.
My grandfather is a muggle, but it’s his sense of humor and steady approach to life that I’ve picked up on. He always said life was going to be inconvenient and not without pain, but it’s how you handle it that gets you back on your feet. That stuck with me, so I try not to let things get under my skin. Either that, or learn to laugh it off.
Thank you for completing the assessment.
History
The Bones are a prominent family in the wizarding community with a rich lineage of both magical and muggle heritage. They have strong connections within the Ministry of Magic, dating back to the early days of the medieval Wizards’ Council. Considered to be some of the finest and most upstanding citizens, the Ministry has never been deprived of a dedicated worker from the family for long. While most Bones have served the Ministry as the usual public employee or middle management, some of the more esteemed positions boasted by the family have included four seats on the Wizengamot (plus a Chief Warlock from 1492-1510), three Department Heads, two Senior Undersecretaries to the Minister of Magic, and a Supreme Mugwump for the International Confederation of Wizards.
So it comes with little surprise that Edgar Bones would follow in his family’s footsteps and dedicate his life towards the betterment of the wizarding world. The middle child of Broderick and Rosalind Bones, Edgar was born on March 3, 1948. His older sister, Amelia, and he were the pride and joy of their parents – relishing in their attention until their baby brother, Everett, joined the clan in 1951. The Bones were fortunate to enjoy the perks of being upper middle class and owned a comfortable sized home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Broderick worked as a senior officer in the Ministry of Magic’s Department of Magical Law Enforcement and spent much of his public career regulating against unjust decrees that endangered the welfares of muggles and muggleborns. While his interest in aiding the oppressed never made him popular among some circles of pureblood society, Broderick raised his children to share the same unbiased opinions and to always have courage when following their moral code.
Plus as the son of a muggleborn witch who was still close to her parents, Edgar spent many weekends with his muggle grandparents. He was particularly close with his grandfather and the two of them often spent their mornings fishing for brown trout in the nearby rivers, followed by lively afternoon games of Dragons and Warlocks (naturally taught by Edgar), and drinking hot chocolate in the evenings while they listened to the latest Guy Mitchell and Perry Como records. Edgar’s fondest memory of his grandfather is the time they spent on the back porch learning to play guitar. He remembers his grandfather patiently teaching him where to place his fingers on the chords and how proud he was when Edgar played “Rock Around the Clock” for the first time. Edgar perceived his grandfather as a man with a sharp sense of humor who enjoyed life and found little to be unhappy about. Though he may not have understood the world his daughter now inhabited, he always told Edgar that he was grateful to see how happy she was and that she gave him some damn good grandkids to spoil.
At age eleven, Edgar was sent to Hogwarts and sorted into Hufflepuff much like his father and sister. Edgar quickly found his place among his welcoming housemates as a dedicated and hardworking student who valued patience, loyalty, and a decent set of ethics. He enjoyed Quidditch like most other boys, but tended to favor activities like the Dueling Club and Potion Pioneers. Edgar proved himself to also be an academically strong student where one of his best subjects was Defense Against the Dark Arts. It wasn’t, however, until his fourth year that Edgar realized the path in life he was meant to take. An Auror from the Ministry of Magic spoke during one of Edgar’s DADA classes and talked about the particulars of the job and the qualifications. Edgar found himself enraptured by the exciting Auror lifestyle and knew that was where he was meant to be.
So Edgar doubled down on his studies to earn the marks required of an Auror. He earned the title prefect during his fifth year much to the pride of his parents and grandfather. As a prefect, he actually took some joy in mentoring the first years and showing them around the Hufflepuff quarters. He also made an effort to stand up for the wizards and witches of mixed or muggle heritage who found themselves on the receiving end of a pretentious pureblood. When it came to his OWLs and NEWTs, Edgar successfully managed to secure the E’s and O’s required to throw his hat in the ring of applicants for the Ministry of Magic’s Auror Division.
Upon graduating Hogwarts, Edgar followed Bones family tradition and pledged his service to the Ministry. As one of the newest Aurors-in-Training, Edgar spent the next three years undergoing a stringent battery of character and aptitude tests as well as extensive training in magical defenses and criminal investigation. He discovered he had a knack in field work for interviewing witnesses and questioning suspects, and that his modest looks made him ideal for stakeouts and other under-the-radar jobs. One of Edgar’s proudest moments is the day he became a full-fledged Auror on November 10, 1969. Like any man with a reason to celebrate, Edgar hit the town with the other newly minted Aurors and proceeded to get piss drunk as they talked about their exciting new careers.
Unfortunately, as Edgar would soon learn, the excitement part would have to wait. For the first two years, Edgar was a glorified desk jockey – stuck to do the paperwork of the more senior Aurors who felt it was beneath them. When Edgar did manage to snag time in the field, it was considered rookie work: talking down a drunken wizard from breaking the Statue of Secrecy, convincing a goblin to return a stolen wand, or breaking up a domestic squabble between a husband and wife who were on the verge of jinxing one another. Edgar kept a good sense of humor about it – knowing he was simply paying his dues – and took everything in stride.
And Edgar’s big break did finally come in December 1971. He had been called to a job no one else wanted – a robbery case at Flourish & Blotts for the theft of The Renaissance Man by Rizen Wigglesworth. Edgar dutifully examined the scene, but when he questioned the witch behind the counter, he realized it bore an eerily resemblance to a few case files he worked on for a senior Auror. Launching his own private investigation, Edgar discovered the seemingly separate cases were indeed connected. His investigation eventually led him and a small team of Aurors to the private institute of Gilbert Hare with evidence linking the small research facility to illicit experimentation of resurrecting the dead. The raid discovered three of seven reportedly stolen corpses and Hare’s assistant, Mortimer Burke. Due to Edgar’s diligent research, the Ministry immediately shut down the private facility. Hare was sentenced to fourteen years in Azkaban for leading the illegal affairs, while Burke was sentenced to six months for involuntary assistance.
The arrest of dark wizard, Gilbert Hare, was enough to catch the attention of Edgar’s superiors. He began to receive an increase in demanding cases that required him out in the field, and was quickly seen as a very capable and talented Auror. Despite his rising star, Edgar volunteers every year to speak with the fourth year Defense Against the Dark Arts class at Hogwarts. He hopes to instill the same sense of wonder and inspiration in the young witches and wizards as he had been at school.
During his time as an Auror, Edgar noticed an unusual increase of wizard violence against muggles and muggleborns. It became a concerning topic of discussion at the Bones’ Sunday family dinner – enough so that Edgar brought it up to Albus Dumbledore this past spring after speaking to the fourth years. In the safety of his office, Dumbledore revealed to Edgar the truth about Lord Voldemort and his devoted Death Eaters. He told Edgar that war was inevitable and the future of both muggles and wizards depended on its outcome. Stunned, Edgar thought of his family – his muggleborn mother, his pro-muggleborn father, his halfblood siblings, his muggle grandparents – and an immediate desire to protect them swelled within him. He didn’t hesitate to accept Dumbledore’s offer to join the newly formed Order of the Phoenix. It was a chance to follow his moral code and do the right thing; if he truly wanted to better the wizarding world then this was how it would be accomplished.
Now Edgar splits his time between working as an Auror and a member of the Order. It’s exhausting as the demands of the Ministry keep piling up and the fledging Order consists of so few members that Edgar often finds himself pulling late nights to accomplish it all. Edgar continues to push Dumbledore to allow him to do some recruiting; they need more members if they ever hope to put an end to Voldemort’s deadly agenda.
